Finally the unveiling of a New HPE Simplivity


Not quite long ago, the term hyperconvergence surfaced in the market; a fresh promise of less footprint on hardware devices and more compute advantage.  New brands and new models started showing up gradually. It was this that instigated a challenge among technology manufacturers, which all centered on who would take the market share domain.

It is not surprising that the manufacturers wanted a cut of this cake. It humbly represents a 12.5 Billion business opportunity based on IDC evaluation 2018 report. Revenues from Hyperconverged market sales increased 69.4% which means that in 2017 the Hyperconverged market surpassed $3.7 billion.

The demands were forthcoming until the final benefits of a Solution to minimize data center complexity and improve scalability. HPE came up with HPE Hyperconverge HC380 solution, an IT framework that combines storage, computing and networking into a single system.  HPE hardware was top of the line solution that used Apollos configuration where you could have up to 4 server nodes in a 2U rack footprint.

HPE did not remain in the market lead with the hardware model at this time but something was cooking in the strategy kitchen. Simplivity was on the drawing table. HPE came to terms to purchase Simplivity for $650 million as a means of expanding. Its hyperconverge offering and analytics believed it was a good deal. Nonetheless, the rest is History.

HPE became the most requested Hyperconverge Brand with the HPE Simplivity 380 based on Gen9 and Gen10 models. You have got to see the Apollo 2000 system from HPE

Have you seen the Apollo 2000 Series System from HPE yet? Well, you definitely should if you haven’t. Allow me to mention a few key features and you will understand why this solution should be implemented for private cloud systems that require high density compute and high performance. Rack space is expensive, and you need high density computing. The HPE ProLiant XL190r Gen9 Server is a 2U, two (2) processors half-width server for the HPE Apollo 2000 System. Each server node harnesses the performance of dual Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 v3 or E5-2600 v4 series processors with option choices from 4-22 Cores, 1.6GHz – 3.5GHz CPU speed, and 16 DDR4 DIMM slots with up to 2400 MHz and up to 2TB (16 x128 GB) memory. It has additional PCIe expansion slots to support up to two (2) integrated accelerators (GPUs or Coprocessors).

Lanzamiento de HPE ProLiant Gen10 – Tour Gen10

En un acto el día 2 de Noviembre de 2017 llevado en un Restaurant ubicado en San Jose, Costa Rica, HPE inicio el Tour del Lanzamiento de su nuevo producto el Servidor ProLiant Gen10.  Los expositores fueron:

Entre los puntos destacados de la conversación estuvieron:
Adquisicion de Nimble Storage por HPE creada 2007 en Silicon Valey y es parte ahora de HPE.

Esta corporación creo un nuevo sistema de almacenamiento con todos los fixtures que nos lleva al fortalecimiento del portafolio de storage a partir de Q4 de FY17. Nimble Storage trabaja los accesos entre APP y la DATA como un GAP entre estos 2 para determinar dónde está la relación entre comunicaciones, servidores y aplicaciones y no necesariamente del storage.

A partir de este momento hay un componente importante llamado Infosight Predictive Analytics en el portafolio y configuraciones de HPE. Este permitirá dejar información diaria del desempeño por medio del 3PAR y admitir sea analizada de forma predictiva.

Permite desde el Software de Storage, Redes, Servidores Virtuales con cada una sus políticas que pueda reportar y colectar data e ir compartiendo a un cloud a sus centros datos y desde allí comenzar hacer Analytics e iniciar en el mejor tiempo correctivos sobre instalaciones de actualizaciones de parches y firmware más recientes del sistema operativo en tiempo real.

Cabe destacar que la data está en el borde EDGE y puede ser analizada y centralizada con Infosight que viene con Nimble y está extrapolando al resto del portafolio de storage fortaleciéndolo.

La ganancia del boot se amplía por HW, no es del procesador es de la arquitectura mecánica del computador que permite hacer ese tipo de logro adicional.

La entonación del equipo bajo los parámetros de firmware y boot son particulares para la máquina, puede estar corriendo VMWare con requerimientos muy distintos a una máquina que este corriendo Oracle o High Performance Computing o Exchange, allí HPE construyo paquetes de entonación para quitarle ese trabajo a los clientes donde se corren y se entonan HW-FW y Driver para una determinada carga típica.

Por ejemplo para cargas de misión crítica, quizás no sea la maquina más rápida, pero al correr estos paquetes tendrán todos los fixtures de seguridad encendidos.

El set de parámetros viene pre-empaquetados y pre-aprobados por HPE. La máquina se transforma con una personalidad adecuada para el uso que quiera darse. Esto no lo tiene ningún fabricante.

Security sigue siendo la preocupación más grande del mercado, se mencionó que la corporación tiene más de 100 mil ataque diarios a la red. Los clientes están expuestos a estos ataques y para HPE pasaron del estándar de seguridad a cambiar a un nuevo paradigma de seguridad, primero protegiendo el HW y la cadena de suministro evitando que las cosas pasen y luego una vez que pasen sean inmediatamente detectadas, estando sin dudas que fueron atacados, el peor ataque es el que uno no se entera, es un alto peligro para el negocio por temas de extorsión y una vez que sucede el ataque importante tener las herramientas para recuperarse y seguir prestando el servicio después de ser impactado y no perder el prestigio a nivel comercial.

Para protegerse se eliminaran todas las posibles vulnerabilidades del equipo (Sistema Operativo) y de Hypervisores vmware esxi que nos ayudaran. Para detectarse estará protegida durante toda la vida con silicón root of trust y está basado en que cada silicón que se coloca en los computadores está firmado electrónicamente, es decir, cuando Intel suministra el procesador a la fábrica de HPE se firma y esta se guarda en un componente que tiene los Proliant que se llama iLO (chip de gerencia) y es fabricado directamente, sin contratación afuera (supply chain) estos tienen que ser consistentes entre iLO, el procesador y todos los elementos del computador desde que es construida. Se verifica el firmware constantemente si algo ha cambiado auditablemente y finalmente existen formas automatizadas de recuperarse de un error con algoritmos de seguridad (NCA) para minimizar los tiempos.

Literatura Técnica
El nuevo servidor HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 es un sistema basado en AMD Opteron, se venderá en tres versiones distintas con diferentes procesadores:
• AMD Opteron X3216: 2 núcleos a 1.6 GHz de base y hasta 3.0GHz cuando se le exija. Este procesador incorpora gráficos, incorpora 4 núcleos dedicados a la GPU. 1MB de caché L2 y un consumo entre 12-15W.

• AMD Opteron X3418: 4 núcleos a 1.8 GHz de base y hasta 3.2GHz cuando se le exija. Este procesador incorpora gráficos, incorpora 6 núcleos dedicados a la GPU. 2MB de caché L2 y un consumo entre 12-35W.

• AMD Opteron X3421: 4 núcleos a 2,1 GHz de base y hasta 3.4GHz cuando se le exija. Este procesador incorpora gráficos, incorpora 8 núcleos dedicados a la GPU. 2MB de caché L2 y un consumo entre 12-35W.

La memoria RAM seguirá siendo de tipo ECC, pero en este caso es DDR4. La memoria por defecto es 8 GB (1 x8 GB) PC4 – 2400T DDR4 UDIMM, pero tenemos disponibles dos slots para tener hasta 32GB de memoria RAM (2 módulos de 16GB cada uno).

Este nuevo servidor incorpora un controlador Ethernet Broadcom BCM5720 Dual Port, por lo que tendremos dos NIC con 1Gbps cada uno para hacer Link Aggregation por ejemplo. Este nuevo servidor tiene dos slots de expansión con interfaz PCI-e 3.0, uno de ellos es x8 y el otro es x4, ambos de bajo perfil ya que sino no cabría en la caja del servidor. En estos puertos de expansión se le podría instalar una tarjeta de red con más puertos, e incluso con puertos 10GbE.

Respecto al controlador de almacenamiento del HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10, incorpora el Marvell 88SE9230 compatible con SATA3 a 6Gbps y soporta RAID 0, 1 y 10 únicamente.
También es posible instalarle de manera opcional un lector de DVD con interfaz SATA, e incluso un disco SSD SATA para instalar ahí el sistema operativo principal. Este nuevo servidor HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 también dispone de 4 bahías para alojar discos duros, y aunque de manera oficial soporta hasta discos de 4TB, estamos seguros que no habrá ningún problema por utilizar discos de mayor capacidad, eso sí, no permite hot-plug (retirada en caliente sin apagar el servidor).
Dispone de 2 puertos DisplayPort 1.2 para sacar vídeo en resolución 4K, permite sacar vídeo por ambas interfaces simultáneamente. También incorpora un puerto VGA, 2 puertos USB 3.0 en la parte frontal, 2 puertos USB 3.0 en la parte trasera y otros dos puertos USB 2.0 en la parte trasera.

El nuevo HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 incorpora una fuente de alimentación de 200W, y no permite fuente de alimentación redundante, lo mismo ocurre con el ventilador del sistema, incorpora uno y no permite uno adicional porque simplemente no cabe en la caja.

Este servidor es compatible con sistemas operativos Microsoft Windows Server, sistemas basados en Linux como Red Hat o Debian, y también basados en Unix como FreeBSD, el sistema operativo que incorpora por defecto es ClearOS. El ClearOS es un sistema operativo muy fácil de utilizar, con una suite de aplicaciones que permitirá a los usuarios la instalación del software más común para un servidor.
